Established in 1998 with an audience of only 300 people, RWMF is now a major iconic annual event in Malaysia, eagerly anticipated by a crowd of over 20,000 people who flock from overseas, interstate as well as locals. It is a family-friendly event with an accent on participation, especially at the afternoon workshops. It has a record of environmental awareness as evidenced by its greening initiatives, its attention to recycling and waste management initiatives while, the usage of shuttle buses promotes carbon emission reduction. The Rainforest World Music Festival is a unique festival that brings together renowned world musicians from all continents and indigenous musicians from the interiors of the mythical Island of Borneo. Special events like pop up performances by performers or more in depth tutorials on cultural instruments are held throughout the festival, while a health and wellness programme adds another level of involvement and fun for the audience, with traditional and modern exercise, from yoga and tai chi to Zumba. The festival site is set up with a variety of food and beverage stalls, an arts and crafts area, festival merchandise, Sarawak souvenirs and CDs by the performing artists, thus contributing to a fun filled, wholesome festival experience for all. It is a World Music festival extraordinaire set against the magnificent backdrop of the legendary Mount Santubong.
